I am hosting Thanksgiving Dinner this year.
Yes, hosting (OMFG).
I have never cooked a Turkey before in my life, nor have I prepared mashed potatoes, or pretty much anything that is part of a normal, sit-down meal, Thanksgiving or not.
I'm only just learning the basics - like how to throw together a rice and vegetables meal - but I decided to host a full on American Thanksgiving Day Dinner for myself and my American friend (because have I mentioned how much I miss fall?!).
She decided to invite over some friends. Which has me a little nervous. I don't have room to screw this up now. (Although none of the other guests are from the States so at least they won't have grand expectations of homestyle cooking!). On top of general jitters about preparing a huge meal for other people, I am worried that I won't be able to find certain important things like cranberries (or even a turkey! we might actually end up eating chicken). Also, the guests have a variety of preferences and dietary restrictions so I'm trying to make sure everyone will be happy.
So here I am, collecting recipes and grocery shopping for what seems like 40 days and 40 nights. You will notice that I selected as many recipes as possible that included the word "easy."
The Turkey:
Gravy:
Stuffing:
Cranberry Sauce:
Potentially this one, but I'm not sure I'll be able to find cranberries here http://allrecipes.com/recipe/cranberry-sauce-ii/detail.aspx
Mashed Potatoes:
Steamed green beans, carrots, and parsnips
Candied Sweet Potatoes (contingent upon actually being able to find sweet potatoes in the Middle East!):
Salad:
One of these, not sure which yet http://www.delish.com/entertaining-ideas/holidays/thanksgiving/thanksgiving-salads
Rolls (TBD)
Cornbread (TBD)
Pumpkin Pie:
Apple Pie:
Pecan Pie (TBD)
Mulled Wine:
And probably K.A.G.'s wonderful cocktail recipe!
Any recipe recommendations or words of wisdom for a first timer? Also, I've been wondering this for several days now, if you are supposed to cook your turkey for 4 hours, and you only have one oven, how on earth do you get anything else cooked???
